Last summer after our hiking trip to Jacob’s Ladder, we stopped at Mamaka Bowls- a place that makes smoothie bowls similar to the owners’ childhood ones made in Southern California. Naturally, then, when they said they were getting a new location in Fort Worth, we couldn’t wait to go.
Here’s the problem- it’s crazy hot in Texas during the summer. While a cool down with a smoothie bowl soothes the soul, I felt like our day needed just a bit more than smoothie bowls and grocery runs. So I dug for something to do- and stumbled upon Burger’s Lake.
We’re going to go in reverse order because, I don’t know, I feel like ice cream/smoothie bowl/ something cold goes perfect AFTER you take a dip in the pool. So, here we go!
Burger’s Lake is a spring-fed lake that has been open since the 1920s. As you can see from the video, there is plenty of stuff to do- from rope swining, to sliding, diving, and maybe even building a sand castle. For the little ones, there is also a blob and a playground area for an extra $2.
You can enjoy watching the other kids do some crazy diving, including flipping into the lake. We also found a shallow part that you can sit at and people watch.
There is a place to eat, and plenty of things to do if you want to get out of the water for a bit, including grilling areas and several volleyball pits.
While we’ve become a bit spoiled and didn’t find it as interesting as we’d hoped for, it would be spectacular to take younger kids to. Heck, even we were surprised by the amount of time we were there. What felt like 30 minutes ended up being five hours!
Here is the details- when the owner, KK, was in high school she would beg her mom to make her some of the smoothie bowls similar to those that she ate in Laguna Beach over the summer. Her mother agreed and ended up making over 400 per week. Once KK graduated, they took a break…
But not too long of a break. One summer, in college, KK and her mom decided to go it again. After that summer, they leased a store front in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
Waco was their second location, and on July 25, 2021, Fort Worth became their second.
Nevaeh and I love the four different ones we’ve tried, while Bre and Maddie have each tried one bowl a piece, loving it as well.
The atmosphere is what makes the place. If we ever need a taste of Cali right here in Texas, all we have to do is put on our flip flops and head over to Mamaka where the philosopy is, “life is better when it’s lived in courderoy shorts by the beach, that laughter and salty air is better than most things and being a free spirit is a dang good thing.”
If you’re ever in Fort Worth, and looking to cool off while staying outside, I recommend finding some water and a great place to cool down afterwards. You know, a place with smoothie bowls that feed the stomach and the soul.
