Hard to believe our big road trip started a year ago today. That being said, we’ve visited the Big Texan Steakhouse enough times that I think I can give an honest review of the restaurant.
Our first visit was in 2016 when we were headed to Denver for my graduation, then last summer on our first epic Route 66 road trip, and just a few weeks ago when we were headed to Carlsbad Caverns.
Here’s Our Review
The Wait Time
Just a heads up- the big Texan does not take reservations. It’s on a first come, first serve basis but our wait has never been over half an hour and that was only the first time we went. Which was okay because we really wanted to check out the other aspects of the tourist attraction.
The Steakhouse has lots of things to do while you wait, from big hats and t-shirts, to a shooting range and an outdoor area with games and even a cat! Maybe cats aren’t your thing though? Then be sure to check out the snake inside. Needless to say, you definitely won’t be bored while you wait.
Are you so hungry you cannot wait to eat? Grab some fudge or gelato while you wait. Yes, I know those are not dinner options but something is better than nothing and if you’re hungry- it will satisfy.
Also- next time we go (and I know there will be a next time) I’m going to try their coffee and let you know.
The Dining Experience
The big steak pictured was from the first time we went and it was too big, making it tough. The last two times, Brandon opted for a smaller (yet still big by my standards) steak. Veah and I got the chicken fried steak all three times and have loved it each time we got it, and Bre ordered the Roy Rogers, which is steak fingers and french fries with gravy. None of us were disappointed.
Although I haven’t done it yet, one of these times I am going to save room for dessert. That cake looks amazing.
The waiters have always been attentive, which is nice. They also have a group of two gentlemen offering to play a song for anyone who wants one. If you go on a day when someone is trying the 72 oz. steak meal, they will sit them up front on a podium with the timer going down behind them. While we were there the last time two guys were doing it for what looked to be a vlog but I haven’t found that episode on Youtube yet.
As you can see, it has a country feel. Not sure if you expected anything different- I know I didn’t.
Yes, if you’re a foodie who likes an experience- I’d recommend going. It is a lot of fun.
I’d give it an 8/10. I love it, the food was decent, the ambiance was perfect for what you expect. The only reason it didn’t get a 10/10 was the food, while good, was not anything out of the ordinary. This might be because I’m not a huge steak person… but the other reason I gave it an 8 is because it is a bit of a tourist trap. Everyone knows about it which is what causes the longer wait times- mind you, wait time that they do fill very well with things to do.
Veah gave it an 8/10 as well because it doesn’t seem as clean as she’d like (though I didn’t notice anything too dirty) and the food was again, decent but not worth writing home about.
Bre gives it an 8.5 because she likes that her dinner (the kids’ menu) comes in a cowboy/girl hat that she can take home and she likes the decoration.
